Undone Watches make a splash in the streetwear scene with Jeffstaple
So Undone watches are back again and this time with a streetwise collaboration with renowned streetwear extraordinaire Jeffstaple. Drawing inspiration from both Jeff's street fashion style and his Chinese heritage, this limited edition from Undone Watches and Jeffstaple is both street savvy and a nod to the design inspirations that Jeff is renowned for.
This design collaboration, like all of Jeff’s work, is sure to be a huge hit! Jeff has worked across the design industry with Nike, Puma and Cole Haan and been at the forefront of street trends with his brand Staple Pigeon. Bringing his style and heritage to this limited line from Undone Watches with a distinctive new dial design and a choice of 3 different strap options.
The dial design on this Undone x Jeffstaple collaboration combines two elements intrinsically linked to Jeff. Firstly a reinterpretation of the Yin-Yang symbolism as a nod to his Chinese heritage. Secondly, the Staple Pigeon that Jeff is renowned for and the unofficial mascot of New York City. These two elements cleverly combined with interconnected pigeon heads make for a genuinely different and eye-catching design.
The black and white of the Yin-Yang is punctuated sharply on this dial with the handset used. The mercedes hour hand and the straight minute hand are black but filled with a colour Undone describe as Pigeon-Pink not quite red and not quite pink but somewhere between the two, and its a very nice colour indeed. It contrasts against the black and white of the dial perfectly and makes this dial pop. The second’s hand featured is in the same colour and a lightning strike shape, adding some edginess to the dial.
The Yin-Yang exploration continues when the light fades, and the lumed hands reveal the two distinct colours used for nighttime legibility. Blue lume for the white Pigeon head, white eye and hour markers, and green for the lumed hands. Half roman numeral-half circular hour markers are used on the dial, again a reinterpretation of the California style mixed with the Yin-Yang. A large triangle at noon and Undone at six o’clock in Pigeon-Pink finishes off what I feel is a very well executed and sharp looking dial.
The 40mm satin black PVD finished case and bezel contribute to the urban street theme nicely, giving a very stealthy look that contrasts very well against the Yin-Yang dial and Pigeon-Pink details on the dial and hands. The bezel is marked with Jeff’s company motto, “Positive Social Contagion.” and on the opposite side, the year of Jeff’s birth and the year he created his brand. The case also features a screw-down crown and see-through case-back to ensure 100m of water resistance.
Finishing off the look is the double-domed polycarbonate crystal which gives the watch a total height of 15mm from the case-back to the top of the crystal. Movement wise, Undone opted for the reliable Seiko NH35A with its 42-hour power reserve. This was an obvious movement choice and a movement Undone use in most of their watches. Easily serviced and repaired if needed and offering reliable timekeeping, this one should cause no issues.
Strap wise, this is where this collaboration comes alive once more, with various strap options available. A black PVD bracelet and leather and different NATO strap options are all available depending on the specific limited edition you choose. It’s worth noting though if you do opt for the steel bracelet version (Limited to 300 pieces), you also receive the Staple Pigeon branded NATO as part of this package. This Staple Pigeon branded NATO is available as a separate purchase if you wanted one for any of your other Undone divers, so this could be an option if you like the look of this one
Conclusion
So I’ve been wearing this one for a week or two now on and off, and because it has that 40mm case size, I find it wears very well indeed! Stylistically and design-wise, I like what Jeff and Undone watches have come up with here. Incorporating the Staple Pigeon head into the dial with that Yin-Yang style really works well, and going the extra mile to make sure this is done with lume really sets this dial off at night.
The bracelet and strap options also allow you to take this to the next level with the full staple branded NATO strap or tone it down with leather or steel, so you have plenty of options when it comes to changing your style.
The black-white and pigeon red is definitely an edgy street look and being a limited run from Undone and Jeffstape, I’m pretty sure these will sell out fast if any of Jeff's previous work is anything to go by!
