Hello watchfam! Let's dive into the world of CIGA Design, a dynamic player in the watchmaking scene. Kickstarted by Zhang Jianming in 2012, CIGA Design has quickly become a symbol of the innovative spirit of Chinese watchmaking. The most striking aspect of CIGA? Their fearless dedication to blending groundbreaking innovation with stunning design.
Storytelling Through Watches
CIGA's approach isn't just about creating watches; it's about weaving stories into every timepiece. Earning accolades like the German National Design Award, they've made an impressive mark in an arena typically led by historic brands. In just a decade, CIGA has transformed our watch expectations with their unique blend of art and mechanics.
Watches That Start Conversations
Each CIGA watch goes beyond mere timekeeping; their pieces are conversational artworks. Their design philosophy marries contemporary style with the essence of traditional watchmaking. The Z Series stands as a prime example: it's a harmonious blend of mechanical sophistication and cutting-edge design. But it's the ethos behind CIGA that really resonates with me: crafting timepieces that make bold statements and get new generations interested in watches.
The Z Series: Artistic Precision
The Z Series is a testament to CIGA's innovative spirit, showcasing a captivating design that immediately draws the eye. The highlight is its skeleton dial, offering a glimpse into the modified Seagull ST2553JK movement, transforming the watch into a showcase of mechanical art thanks to its see through design.
CIGA Design Z Series: A Closer Look at the Specs
Let's get up close and personal with the CIGA Design Z Series. This watch isn't just about making a style statement; it's packed with features that make it a standout piece. Here's the lowdown on what makes the Z Series tick:
Case Diameter: The Z Series comes in at a neat 40.8mm in diameter. It's the perfect size for a bit of wrist presence without going overboard. Plus, it's versatile enough to suit various wrist sizes, which is always a win in my book.
Case Material: Crafted from DLC-coated 316L stainless steel, this watch is built to last. It's got that tough-as-nails vibe but still looks sleek and modern. And if you're into a bit more variety, check out the Titanium and 18K Gold variants – they're real eye-catchers.
Crystal: Now, this is where things get fancy. The Z Series flaunts a 1.2mm thick Sapphire crystal. We're talking top-notch scratch resistance and crystal-clear viewing. The slight curve of the crystal adds that extra touch of class, seamlessly blending with the watch's profile and giving a very sleek look.
Movement: At its heart is the Seagull ST2553JK movement. Reliable and visually stunning, this movement keeps the Z Series running like a dream. And with a 40-hour power reserve, it's got your back for those long days.
Water Resistance: With up to 30 meters of water resistance it’s no dive watch, but the Z Series is ready for your daily adventures. Whether it's a splash here or a quick dunk there, this watch can handle it.
Strap Options: Choices, choices! The Z Series offers silicone and leather straps, so you can switch it up depending on your mood or the occasion. The silicone strap is especially cool, but both options come fitted with a quick-release spring bar – talk about convenience.
Design Highlights: The real showstopper is the skeletal dial design. It's not just a pretty face; it's a window into the watch's soul. It's CIGA Design's way of saying, "Hey, look at this mechanical masterpiece we've created!"
Pricing: The current price for the Z Series in Titanium as tested is £221.00 or $279.00. That's a lot of watch for the money!
These specifications aren't just numbers; they represent CIGA's commitment to combining artistic flair with technical prowess and all at a price that won’t leave you needing an awkward conversation with your bank manager!
Unboxing: A Narrative Experience
Unboxing the Z Series is like unfolding a story. The unique book-like packaging is a nod to the brand's narrative-centric philosophy, enhancing the anticipation and joy of the first glimpse. Open this up and your presented with the Z Series and both strap options neatly laid out.
Comfort and Aesthetics on the Wrist
On the wrist, the Z Series is remarkably comfortable. Its tonneau case shape and lightweight build make it a snug fit, even for my just-over-7-inch wrist. Between the silicone and leather straps, I find myself leaning towards the silicone for its easy-switch feature and how well it complements the watch’s overall aesthetic. The finish across the watch is superb on the Titanium version I have and I'm sure the stainless steel version would be equally impressive! Looking down at the watch you can appreciate the details and effort CIGA Design has gone to to ensure this watch has wrist presence. I enjoyed the red crown stem peaking through the skeleton case sides and the mix of finishes used to make sure the case is just as interesting as the movement to look at.
Reflecting on CIGA's Z Series
The Z Series, with its bold skeletonised design, does pose a legibility challenge, but that's part of its unique charm and ownership proposition. I doubt anyone who has been tempted by a Z Series so far will find that a surprise! A tapered silicone strap could be a nice touch for future models. I always find these just feel more comfortable on the wrist and add a more refined look. The audible rotor might be a little off putting for some and it was noticeable in some situations on my Titanium version. This may subside with more use but if you don't like to hear your watch in motion then it’s a point to bear in mind. Overall it’s very difficult to pick Fault with the Z series as they offer so much that makes them interesting and unique and do so at a price that’s hard to believe.
The Pro’s and Con’s
Pros
Innovative Design: The skeletal dial and overall aesthetic are modern and eye-catching, making the watch a true conversation starter.
Quality Materials: Use of DLC-coated 316L stainless steel, along with options in Titanium and 18K Gold, ensures durability and offers a variety of styles that I think most people will enjoy.
High-Performance Movement: The Seagull ST2553JK movement is not only reliable but also contributes to the watch's visual appeal with a 40-hour power reserve.
Comfortable Wear: Despite its size, the tonneau case shape and lightweight build especially with the Titanium version ensures a comfortable fit on most wrists.
Versatile Water Resistance: With 30 meters of water resistance, it's suitable for everyday wear and can handle occasional splashes.
Unique Unboxing Experience: The book-like packaging adds to the overall experience, reflecting the brand's narrative-driven approach.
Pricing: CIGA Design has priced the Z Series very aggressively offering a very unique watch at a fantastic affordable price! No wonder these watches have generated huge interest.
Cons
Legibility Issues: The highly skeletonized design, while visually stunning, can obviously make it challenging to read the time quickly.
Audible Rotor: The rotor's noise might be noticeable for some users, although it could diminish over time.
Strap Design: A tapered silicone strap could enhance the watch's comfort and aesthetic appeal, but it's currently not an option.
CIGA's Journey and What Lies Ahead
CIGA Design's impact in the watch industry is undeniable. Their IndieGoGo campaign success generating millions of dollars is a testament to their appeal. The Z Series stands out as a timepiece that's not just functional but also a conversation starter, embodying CIGA's philosophy of marrying creativity with craftsmanship. As they continue to innovate, I'm eager to follow their journey, watching them redefine the art of watchmaking for the masses. The Z Series is more than an affordable well made watch; it's a symbol of artistic expression and a harbinger of exciting developments in the watch world from a manufacturer who will no doubt continue to win awards for its designs.
